Female sex workers
The number of Female Sex Workers in India ranges from 5 million to 16 million. The HIV prevalence among female sex workers is 5.38% nationally. Most sex workers have taken up the profession because of a variety of factors over which they have little or no control. These include poverty, gender discrimination, illiteracy, unemployment, culture, social attitudes, trafficking and migration. Once in the profession, the complex inter-linkages of social, economic and cultural factors, on one hand, and unfriendly policy and institutional arrangements, on the other, lead to the poor status of these women and their heightened vulnerability to STI and HIV.

Hence, our project aims to reach out and empower this vulnerable community and recognize and respect them as citizens with equal rights and dignity

Men who have sex with men (MSM), transgenders and Hijras
Evidence from the field, indicated an HIV prevalence of 11.6% among Men who have Sex with Men and Transgenders. Therefore, a great need to work with this community arose. KHPT views homosexuals or transgenders as human beings, like any other, in need of and entitled to good health, dignity and life free of violence and stigma. MSM and transgender populations are mostly poor, harassed and stigmatized and disempowered as homosexuality largely lacks social and moral sanction and is perceived even as illegal.

The stigma and discrimination that they face in the society marginalizes them even more and disempowers them to access services and information. This stigma also facilitates self-blame and worthlessness among MSM and transgender population which makes them indifferent about their health and well being.
