PLHIV
The 2006 estimates suggest national adult HIV prevalence in India is approximately 0.36 percent, amounting to between 2 and 3.1 million people. About 5.2 lakh persons are living with HIV AIDS in Karnataka. People living with HIV (PLHIV) face discrimination and stigma from their own families and the larger society. Lack of support from the state, lose of employment, poor medical facility and deteriorating health conditions add to their difficulty. The project faces the challenge of identifying these positive persons in both rural and urban areas of Karnataka and linking them to the clinical services and positive people’s network at both the district and state levels. Ensuring better quality of life for people living with HIV is key goal.
Orphaned and Vulnerable Children
It is estimated that 1,70,000 children below the age of 15 years are infected with HIV/AIDS in India and 57,000 children infected every year through mother to child transmission. Orphaned and Vulnerable children are those who have either lost their parents to HIV or living in circumstances with high risks to HIV and whose prospects for continued growth and development are seriously impaired.
If a parent dies of AIDS related infections, the child is three times more likely to die, even though he or she is HIV negative. Besides increased risk of death, children whose parents have died due to HIV/AIDS also face stigmatization
